The United States said on Thursday the Nord Stream 2 pipeline between Russia and Germany will not move forward if Russia invades Ukraine.
"I want to be clear with you today. If Russia invades Ukraine, one way or another, Nord Stream 2 will not move forward," U.S. Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland for Political Affairs told reporters at the State Department.
Europe's most divisive energy project, Nord Stream 2 is designed to double the amount of gas flowing from Russia straight to Germany, bypassing traditional transit nation Ukraine, on the bed of the Baltic Sea.
It has faced resistance within the European Union, from the United States as well as Ukraine on the grounds it increases Europe's energy dependence on Russia and denies Ukraine transit fees, at a time of Moscow's broader standoff with the West.
Nuland said also that the United States hopes Russia will study what Washington has offered and come back to the table after the United States submitted a written response to demands Russia has made for a redrawing of post-Cold War security arrangements in Europe since it massed troops near Ukraine, prompting Western fears of an invasion.
Russia said on Thursday it was clear the United States was not willing to address its main security concerns in their standoff over Ukraine, but kept the door open for further dialogue.

The U.S are sore because they wanted the monopoly of energy imports into Europe by charging higher prices and because Russian energy is cheaper, the U.S have sanctioned any company dealing with Russia in this sector and now threatening to shut down something they have not invested in or own because of their typical spiteful hegemony. This resulted in a shortage of energy on the continent, raising prices by energy companies and they are making a fortune at the expense of the consumer.
