As good as the analysis of Professor Meirsheimer are, when it comes to US policy in the Pacific, Professor Meirsheimer is one of upholding US dominance, rather than a multipolar order. I've listened to several talks from Sachs but I learned much new information during this presentation. He expands on backstory & rationale utilized by both sides. Listen carefully.

Sachs is an extremely talented economist, but is worse than a first year undergrad in terms of his knowledge and intuition for IR and security studies.

I’m honestly not impressed with this talk. I’m always suspicious when people list their pedigrees repeatedly but it tracks with the material presented here. This talk is still stuck 30 years in the past. I believe Timothy Snyder has a better modern grasp. Most of this discussion here is predicated on the fact that we’ve somehow in fact moved into some situation where Russia and China are rational, modern state actors who desire peace and the US is the one with solely imperialist intentions in the world. The lack of discussion on Russian and Chinese imperialism which has affected their neighbors for decades (if not centuries) is highly central to this conversation. I was hoping for more from this talk but it just was like drinking weak coffee.

I would suggest that while I love John Mearsheimer his realism like those of a similar thought from his era, is lacking in certain real understandings and so has a fault in the assessment he gives. Namely in that it see's great power politics entirely from how it has been practiced by western powers who are the only predominant region over the world for the last 500 years at least. Chinese Confucianism is wildly different and so gives wildly different incentives unto a nation especially when mixed with a socialist Marxian tradition for the application of modern economics. China does not want to be a global hegemon, and they would very much like a world without any top dog where no matter if a large or small nation all adhere to international law and settle differences via the UN. ^ that is the greatest threat to western / angloAmerican capitalism that has ever existed, western leaders care not that it would lead to a better world with better outcomes for the majority workers of this earth, they only care about top down anti democratic for the profit of few at the expense of most western capitalism being de-legitimised and resigned to a second place approach in the world where it is shown up for the failure it is by gleaming Chinese cities and 10% wage rises in every province for the last 30 years straight all because China has a government that grabs capitalism by the balls and tells it what it will and will not do for people and planet, where as in the west any intervention by government into capitalism and markets = no no no no no. The west has destroyed itself already for the betterment of western capitalism and the handfuls of capitalists at the top of it, alone, at vast expense to the current and future prospects of their peoples.

On behalf of the global working classes and certainly my own around me here in the UK, the lady with the first questions is living in cloud cuckoo land as opposed to the actual reality of matters, when did the west EVER de-escalate this conflict in Ukraine? NEVER HAPPENED, they did everything possible to ensure this day would come, while Russia spent 8 years pursuing diplomacy in effort to avoid this day. It is not a bully but a forlorn actor that western leaders made sure it would feel it has no choice but to do what it is presently doing. As for Ukraines decision to align more with Europe... again, nutty idea given the president that was overthrown refused to sign a key agreement with the EU that would have further aligned Ukraine towards it due to it also having some stipulations in the agreement regarding NATO, shortly after which he was violently overthrown in a US/EU backed coup by far right nationalists after which the US chose the following government from such deplorables and that has been the flavour of the government from that day to this, so don't talk such bullshit about freedom of choice when the Ukrainian post 2014 puppet government went to war with 10 million of its own people in the east over 8 years in effort to remove their right to choose a damned thing in primary effort to force Russian intervention.

I hope everyone is aware of the fact that in 1947 Pakistan had 26% minorities and India had 9% Muslims. Today, India has 14% Muslims and Pakistan has 3% minorities. Both Islamic and Christian pursues either conversion or elimination of the non-believer which has caused most of our problems in the last 2000 years that these religions have existed.

It seems that the professor does not understand the political and international situation in Eastern Europe. It was not that the US wanted to expand NATO, but that countries which have been forcefully integrated into the Soviet Union wanted to become safe after the Soviet Union collapsed and Russia, only years after the collapse, began to harass them. Ukraine did not want to become a NATO member until 2004 when it adopted the Euroatlantic vector because it saw well-being and security there and not in Russia. In 2014 Russia occupied and annexed Crimea and occupied Donbas. But before that, in 2008, they occupied and made puppet states in Georgia. I do not understand why the professor does not consider that Vladimir Putin might just be orientated on conquest as Adolf Hitler was and not in negotiations. Not all decisions are rational, but this, for some reason, is not considered. Do sovereign states have the right to choose their foreign and domestic policies? If yes, what say does Russia should have decisions on Ukrainian internal and foreign policies? Let us stop viewing IR only from the positions of great powers, small states have their interests, and we have to accept them. Like Finland’s decision to join NATO, although it was neutral since the Cold War, but the threat of Russia forced it to reconsider its position. To conclude, the lecture oversimplifies the situation, and only a small portion of it is on topic. Not all actors want to negotiate. Not all decisions of countries are rational. We should not ignore the interests of small states.

Assertion is no substitute for argument but one can best respond to Sachs in his own manner: the Ukraine War was started by Russia, not by Ukraine and not by the US; the country that is being destroyed is Ukraine; the Ukrainian people want freedom and democracy; Putin wants to re-established the Soviet Empire.

"human vision of perfection and striving towards it" Perfection is the bodily defense mechanism for shame (shame being, I am the bad situation, thus to endlessly perpetuate shame, I try and act perfect, seeing that no human actually is close to perfect, I can indefinitely self shame) I would say. "Instead of showing the facade of strength, have the strength to rid oneself of facade" Most people want to feel the same way, and even agree on the things they want to feel better about (ie family, less work, peace etc), the challenge is that before fixing the world we must fix ourselves. Yet to do this one must Confront the fear of their pain. This is so frightening that we'd rather hurtle ourselves into nuclear war then admit that we may need to take a look within. So while his 4th pillar is a start, it is only the identification of the core of the problem. It by no means, solves anything. Once shame is recognized, it can be dealt with in a simple way, making it public. Sure it may be embarrassing, but imagine a culture where we didn't have facades because we were able to care for one another without the need to worry that the recipient of our story may feel guilt/pain/anger/fear etc. Doing this kind of work brings world peace When we abstract and place the blame on "institutions", we simply abdicate ourselves from the personal responsibility required to bring about said peace... Be the change you wish to see

It ain't rocket science. Every nation has a military for security purposes. Wars rely on industrial support. Therefore, by design, wars involve considered decision making and organized preparations. If everyone agrees to sign and implement an agreement on what is acceptable and what isn't. i.e. the Rome statute, and or the UN definition of a sovereign state. Then it is a simple matter of all of those nations that don't break the agreement, stomping the one that does. Systems for the integration and compatibility of forces could also be used to prevent the hijacking of command by the use of both rotational leadership and restrictions on domestic enforcement. Agreement on legislation to prohibit exploitative motivations would go a long way in halting conflicts altogether. Much the same way that the medical field should also be similarly protected.
